Another fantastic RPG soundtrack from Square. -- by Paul Hoyak

Chrono Trigger - OSV is a three CD soundtrack right from the video game. The music is extremely good, much in the style of Final Fantasy VI. However, there are certainly a few differences. Chrono Trigger is of much lighter tone than the many deep, gloomy pieces in FF6 - it has far less bass and isn't as low. Don't let this fool you, however. There are many songs in CT that are impressive, for example the "Battle With Magus" (one of the best songs on the CD - and any CD for that matter) is fast and exciting, but still has sinister undertones. As well, "Black Omen" is a very dark, foreboding tune.

The two bonus tracks are definitely a nice touch. "Battle 2" is a much jazzier song than the other battles, but still conveys the anticipation and danger that is inherent in a battle. "Singing Mountain" is a light, slow, fairly depressing tune. Most of the songs are all around 3 minutes each, but do not seem repetitive at all. Another nice touch, though, is what I call "mini-music": a couple of the tracks on the CD include the quick (couple seconds) ditties of music that were used in the game to convey emotion. For example, the tune "Huh?!" is mini-music, when the characters are surprised. There are only about 4 or 5 of these, so don't be scared. All in all, this CD is an excellent addition to any game music fan's collection. Yasunori Mitsuda is definitely a name to look for in the future.
